What does the Lord ask of you? Moses, when instructing the Children of Israel in his final address, poses the question, what does the Lord ask of you? That question continues to reverberate throughout the generations calling upon each Jew to rise to the challenge of the day. What are the issues confronting us today? What is G-d asking us to do at this time? There are responsibilities, which we shoulder here in America as well as obligations, which we must undertake in Israel. In The United States, we must make a New Years resolution to strengthen our Jewish identity. We must become more committed adherents of Judaism, making it a priority in our lives. This entails reaching out to our fellow Jews in friendship and fellowship, according them the respect that each person deserves and helping all those who seek our assistance. We must, at the same time, devote significant time to Torah study, synagogue attendance and the performance of mitzvot. We must also secure for our children an intensive Jewish education, which will be reinforced by our own actions. Our efforts will only meet with success if we create an atmosphere in which Torah values are practiced, not just preached. We must never lose sight of the needs of our brethren living in Israel. We must continue to support them economically by purchasing bonds, visiting the country, sending our children to study there, supporting religious institutions and by buying Israeli-made products. We must stand by Israel by helping to create a favorable political climate in the United States in which Israels vital interests will be protected. This is what G-d seeks of us. All of us should feel that we truly are shelichai mitzvah, G-ds emissaries, His angels doing His will. As Hashem protects all of His heavenly flock, so will He bless His earthly creatures with a year of success and happiness. My best wishes for a Ketivah Vachatimah Tovah, Rabbi Dr. Solomon F. Rybak
